What is psychiatry and what does a psychiatrist do?

Courtesy of the American Psychiatric Association:

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, or thoughts of suicide. Or, they may be more long-term — feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift, or problems with functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

FAQs

  • At this time, JonesWay Psychiatry is exclusively virtual. Appointments are open to adults aged 18 and up in the state of Texas.

  • Yes. As a fully licensed physician, I can/do prescribe medications. However, medication is only one tool that can be used to help people get better. JonesWay Psych subscribes to the bio-psycho-social model of treatment - care that encompasses the body, mind, and spirit.

Note- I do NOT prescribe controlled substances (benzodiazepines, stimulants etc.)

  • Mood disorders, anxiety, stress, trauma reactions, psychotic disorders etc. I can provide treatment for most psychiatric conditions. However, not every condition is best suited for treatment by a virtual physician. Clinical judgment will be applied in those cases and patients may be referred elsewhere.

  • JonesWay Psych does not accept insurance and is therefore out-of-network with all insurance carriers. You will however be provided with a "superbill" to present to your insurance company for reimbursement, depending on your policy.

  • Initial Psychiatric evaluation - starts at $275

Follow up appointment - starts at $125

*these are baseline current rates, and are subject to change

  • JonesWay Psych does NOT provide evaluations of any kind for third parties (legal cases, long-term disability, fitness for duty etc.).

Additionally, FMLA/short-term leave forms are only completed for current patients who have been seen for at least 3 months, and only on a case-by-case basis.
